C.B. Macdonald's American take on the British links — perhaps the most architecturally important course in the United States.
About the Course
National Golf Links of America (NGLA), on Long Island next to Shinnecock Hills, was Charles Blair Macdonald's love letter to the great holes of Britain. Each hole is modeled after a famous template — Redan, Eden, Alps, Sahara, Punchbowl. NGLA is widely considered the most influential design in American golf history.
History
Macdonald, the first U.S. Amateur champion (1895), spent years studying British links before designing NGLA, which opened in 1911. The clubhouse is famously fashioned after a country manor.
