Donald Ross design called The Monster by Ben Hogan — recently restored by Gil Hanse for major championship play.

About the Course

Oakland Hills Country Club, just outside Detroit, has hosted six U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, and a Ryder Cup. Ben Hogan dubbed the South Course The Monster after his win in the 1951 U.S. Open. Gil Hanse completed a comprehensive restoration in 2019.

History

Donald Ross designed the South Course in 1916–1918. Robert Trent Jones Sr. famously toughened it for the 1951 U.S. Open. Hanse's 2019 restoration returned the bunkering and green complexes to Ross's original intent.

Signature Features

Steeply contoured Ross greens, more than 100 strategically placed bunkers, and the par-4 16th over the pond.

Notable Events & Championships

Six U.S. Opens (1924, 1937, 1951, 1961, 1985, 1996), three PGA Championships, the 2004 Ryder Cup, and the 2034 U.S. Open scheduled.
