Donald Ross's masterpiece in the North Carolina sandhills — host to multiple U.S. Opens with its iconic crowned, turtleback greens.
About the Course
Pinehurst No. 2 is the most famous of nine courses at the Pinehurst Resort, the self-proclaimed Home of American Golf. Donald Ross spent more than 40 years refining the design of his beloved course. The 2010–2011 Coore & Crenshaw restoration removed acres of rough and reintroduced sandy native areas, returning the course to its early 20th-century character.
History
James Walker Tufts founded Pinehurst in 1895 as a health retreat. Donald Ross became head professional in 1900 and began designing No. 2 in 1907, opening it for play in 1907 and continuously tweaking it until his death in 1948.
Signature Features
Domed, crowned greens that repel any imperfect approach shot — widely considered the toughest greens in championship golf — and the wiregrass-and-sand native areas restored by Coore & Crenshaw.
Notable Events & Championships
Three U.S. Opens (1999, 2005, 2014), the historic 2014 back-to-back Men's and Women's U.S. Opens, the 1936 PGA Championship, and the 2024 U.S. Open won by Bryson DeChambeau. Pinehurst is now a permanent U.S. Open anchor site.
