San Diego's spectacular municipal course on the Pacific bluffs — host of the U.S. Open and Farmers Insurance Open.
About the Course
Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course sits on bluffs above the Pacific Ocean north of San Diego. The South Course, redesigned by Rees Jones in 2001, is one of the few municipal courses to host a U.S. Open in modern times.
History
The original courses opened in 1957 on a former military training site. Rees Jones renovated the South in 2001, lengthening and toughening it for major championship play.
Signature Features
Pacific Ocean cliff views from many holes, kikuyu grass rough that wraps clubs at impact, and the dramatic par-5 18th over a pond.
Notable Events & Championships
Two U.S. Opens (2008 — Tiger Woods's playoff win on a broken leg, and 2021 — Jon Rahm), and the PGA TOUR's Farmers Insurance Open every January.
