Pete Dye masterpiece on Lake Michigan — featuring 1,000+ bunkers, dramatic dunes, and Ryder Cup history.
About the Course
Whistling Straits is the marquee course at Destination Kohler. Pete Dye transformed a flat former military airfield along Lake Michigan into a wild, links-like landscape with rolling dunes, dozens of blind shots, and over 1,000 bunkers. Walking-only, with caddies and grazing sheep adding to the Old World feel.
History
Herb Kohler, of the Kohler plumbing family, commissioned Pete Dye in the mid-1990s to build a championship venue on a flat tract of Lake Michigan shoreline. The Straits Course opened in 1998, with sister course Irish opening in 2000.
Signature Features
Holes hugging Lake Michigan bluffs (especially holes 7, 12, 13, 17), more than 1,000 bunkers, and a flock of Scottish Blackface sheep grazing the property.
Notable Events & Championships
PGA Championships in 2004, 2010, and 2015 (Jason Day's record-setting win), plus the 2021 Ryder Cup won decisively by the United States.
