A.W. Tillinghast's brutal championship test in suburban New York — host of six U.S. Opens.

About the Course

Winged Foot Golf Club's West Course, in Mamaroneck just north of New York City, is the quintessential A.W. Tillinghast championship venue. Tillinghast famously called the West Course a man-sized golf course. Recently restored by Gil Hanse to its 1923 character.

History

The New York Athletic Club commissioned Tillinghast in 1921, and the West and East Courses opened in 1923. Hale Irwin won the famous 1974 Massacre at Winged Foot U.S. Open with a 7-over-par score of 287.

Signature Features

Steeply pitched greens, strategic fairway bunkering, and the 1923 design philosophy of a championship test on every hole.
